About Guy Morey

I am well known in the international art world as the first choice for delivering particularly technically challenging installations, where high value, precious, fragile, and sometimes substantial objects are required to be moved, often with difficult access. From being suspended over a shark-filled tank of formaldehyde to the privilege of handling Michaelangelo’s Tondo for the Royal Academy in its move to the National Gallery or moving the massive sculptures in historic buildings, I have spent over 30 years being actively involved in fine art handling and logistics.

My Story

Guy Morey is among the most respected practitioners of the installation of valuable objects in challenging historic buildings in the art world. In a career spanning over thirty years at Premium art logistic company 'Momart' Guy worked his way through Packing and Case making then Technical Services before becoming Director of Operations, he has a rare  knowledge of all aspects of art world logistics. His decision to leave Momart stemmed from his belief that the art world is changing radically and thus needs new roles and practices in order to cope with the unexpected turns and difficulties that the new world order is generating.

Working with Museums and Historical Institutions

I have a wide experience of working on large-scale installation projects both in the UK and abroad. Typically, these are long-term, involving complex integration of different skills and personnel, both internal and external. Generally, the projects can be divided in four phases. Each phase is quoted for and invoiced separately allowing clients to tailor the offer to their need.

Understanding the Project and Tailored Logistics Strategy Planning

· Working with Exhibitions Manger or equivalent, I first spend time understanding the scope and timings of the project.

· Together, we assess the object list, and I itemise the additional technical information needed from lenders to enable packaging and transport companies to estimate on level playing field.

· In doing so, objects with special needs are highlighted, and I develop packing, access and transport specification briefs, including noting where alternative objects may be required.

· I carry out site visits to assess objects where necessary.

· I make an initial list of potential suppliers and sub-contractors for client discussion prior to tender.

· I Assess display requirements and meet with Architect and Structural Engineers to assess floor loading issues and structural concerns for artworks entering the building.

Designing Bespoke Solutions for Complex Problems

· I design cost effective packing solutions by object, often necessitating innovative resolution.

· I develop bespoke solutions for transport where needed, specifying particular equipment.

· I suggest display solutions to reduce object handling and facilitate simple installation.

· With the Architect and Structural Engineers, I design solutions for floor loading issues and structural concerns for artworks entering the building.

· I create an installation schedule with technical labour requirements, including specialist help and equipment where necessary.

Budgeting and evaluation of suppliers and sub-contractors

· I sense check and compare like for like estimates from transport companies ensuring technical consistency.

· I break down project costs and investigate where to subcontract directly to specialist companies.

· I maximise use of suppliers and subcontractors by using knowledge of industry and appropriate skill levels to provide best value for money.

· I review internal procedures to assess where contracting out could be cost effective.

· I utilise personal knowledge to implement more commercial ways for working.

· I can manage the tender process if required.

Project Delivery

· I design and carry out staff training for internal personnel where additional skills are required to ensure implementation to standard.

· I attend site daily to oversee installation schedule and ensure timings and standards are adhered to.

· I ensure client satisfaction prior to sign-off.

· I meet with the client to evaluate satisfactory process and successful completion.

Other Services

· Review internal procedures assess where contracting out could be cost effective. Utilise personal knowledge to implement more commercial ways for working.

· Taylor made staff training

· Courier service - escorting collection works to ensure safe movements and installation.

All projects will vary according to their nature and the above process is indicative.

Working with Collectors and Galleries

Collectors and Galleries have different needs from the larger National and Regional Institution. They often have less dedicated staff for installations and technical logistics and therefore need more specialised external help, albeit for smaller or one-off projects. Private collectors often need one newly purchased or much-loved artwork packed and transported to a different location while galleries may need a reduced version of the project designed for museums.

As each case is different, each project is evaluated and costed on an individual basis. As before, I specialise in handling difficult objects but no job is ever considered too insignificant not to warrant great care and attention.

Working with Artists

Artists have similar needs when packing and delivering artworks post-sale and I have many examples of providing this service. They also have very specific needs when needing special materials, often only available abroad or at long distance, to be transported for their use. A typical example would be Carrara marble, often used by sculptors which is both cumbersome and fragile.

As each case is different, each project is evaluated and costed on an individual basis. As before, I specialise in handling difficult objects, but no job is ever considered too insignificant not to warrant great care and attention.

Working Internationally

I have experience in working both with clients based overseas but also in packing and transportation from the UK to overseas. For clients based overseas, I have been involved in mounting entire collections and exhibitions as well as specialised one-off packaging and transportation. For UK to abroad, I have a specialised knowledge of air freight packaging, ensuring the lowest cost by innovative use of low-weight materials and optimised load distribution.

I have contacts in many countries, including Europe, USA and the Far and Middle East. We have worked together over a number of years whether as local agents, suppliers or sub-contractors. My network ensures a high standard of service.
